The district has two major border crossings with Zimbabwe , one commercial port at Chirundu and the other tourist border crossing at the Kariba Dam. Both Immigration and Customs are headed by a Senior Immigration Officer and Senior Customs & Excise Officer at each of the respective border posts.

What you should know

Visitors to Zambia should be aware that certain nationalities may be required to obtain Visa's to enter the country. Visas may be obtained from the Zambian Embassy or High Commission in the country of origin or at the border post.

Procedures at Border Posts

On arrival at the border post, proceed to the Immigration Office and report to the Officer on duty. You will be required to submit your passport and visa (if appropriate) for examination and stamping. Should you have not acquired a visa prior to arrival you will be asked to apply for one and pay the appropriate visa fee. Please note that all visa fees must be paid in US$ or ?????. You will be asked to state the nature and duration of your visit and your entry stamp will reflect the duration of your stay. Please ensure that you check the exit date stamped in your passport before leaving the office.

What you should know

Visitors to Zambia should be aware that all goods (including personal items) should be declared on entry to the country. Personal items such as ???????? will be allowed duty free but should you be in possession of dutiable items you will be required to pay the appropriate duty and VAT on those items. The Value for Duty Purposes (VDP) and the rate of duty will be assessed by the duty Customs Officer. VAT (currently 16%) is charged on the VDP plus duty.

Visitors travelling by vehicle should be aware that certain documentation is required before the vehicle is allowed into the country under the Temporary Importation Scheme: namely

The ownership documentation of the vehicle must be in the name of the driver otherwise a letter from the owner will be required verifying that the driver has permission to use the vehicle.

Visitors should also be aware that all vehicles should have an Interpol Clearance Certificate to verify that you are the bone-fide owner and that the vehicle is not stolen. Interpol Officers are on duty at the entry barrier to verify these details.

Procedures at Border Posts

After reporting to the Immigration Officer at the border post, you should now report to the Customs Officer on duty.

You will be required to submit your gate pass and asked to declare any goods in your possession. The duty officer will assess your declaration and determine any duty payable. Please ensure that you check all documentation before leaving the office.

Once you have completed the Customs & Excise procedures, proceed to the entry gate and submit your gate pass. The Officer on duty at the gate may ask permission to inspect your vehicle and/or goods carried.

The Zambia Police Service has its local offices in Siavonga and is responsible for the whole Siavonga District including Chirundu. The Siavonga Zambia police Service is headed by the Officer In Charge and the structure includes Criminal Investigation (CID), Traffic, etc etc ????????
